An air conditioner production line is a system used to cool a space by removing heat from the space and moving it to certain outside areas. Cool air can then flow throughout the building through ventilation. Air conditioners require a certain work input to operate, otherwise entropy will naturally decrease, which is forbidden by the second law of thermodynamics. An air conditioner acts like a heat pump, but follows a cooling cycle. This cooling cycle can be seen in Figure 2. To cool, a substance called a refrigerant is processed as follows:
Cold liquid refrigerant draws heat from the warmer room in the evaporator, cooling the room.
The refrigerant will then phase into a gas and pass through the compressor to increase its temperature.
The refrigerant then passes through the condenser coil, transferring heat from the refrigerant to the outside air.
The refrigerant expands to reduce its pressure and cools below room temperature to repeat the cycle again.

Air conditioners are called "split systems" because there is an outdoor unit (condenser) and an indoor unit (evaporator). The two systems work together to accomplish the task of cooling the interior space while dehumidifying it. This dehumidification occurs when warm air from inside passes through a cold evaporator, where it condenses and loses moisture, just as warm air does to a glass of cold lemonade.
A split system describes an air conditioner with separate indoor and outdoor components. There is another type of air conditioner that combines these components into an outdoor system called a "packaged" system.
